The moment that changed my entire career. A friend came walking down the hallway and stopped me.
“Hey Jess, I had this dream last night…
I want to know what you think it means, you’re good with this stuff.”
I fumbled my words making some reply about how I didn’t think I was actually “good with this stuff,” but he persisted. He told me the dream, which involved the ocean, sharks and him eventually getting eaten, and it was like it all SNAPPED into place. I could identify the core emotions, see the metaphor in the plot and I told him exactly what I thought of the dream.
Well damn…
that’s exactly what I’m struggling with.
It was then that I knew something special had just happened. Over the span of just a couple minutes I was able to connect deeply with my friend in ways that would have taken hours through normal conversation. He felt seen, heard and empathized with in ways that he had struggled to feel before. He also got directly to the core of his emotions without his anxious thoughts getting in the way.
From then on, I started talking about dreams and sharing them with the world as a revolutionary way to break past mental health barriers that traditional therapy has struggled to overcome. It launched my practice and my mentorship program.
Which, by the way, spots are FILLING UP for the Mentorship Program! It just came out of the vault over the past two weeks. I am accepting only 15 applications, and the opportunity to apply closes after 90 days! So if you have ever thought about working with me, don’t let the opportunity pass you by! I can’t wait to get to know you and begin helping you achieve your goals! Now, back to the insight about your nightmares!
After 6 years of studying this topic,
here are the top five things
I have learned about nightmares:
1. Nightmares are healing
First, you HAVE to stop hating yourself. Your mind is not against you and it certainly doesn’t want to ruin your day. By having nightmares, your mind is searching for answers to your greatest struggles. It is also releasing any repressed emotions that have been stored up from your day. Without these nightmares, your mind would become overwhelmed with these emotions and would struggle to solve problems!
Sometimes those emotions and experiences which fuel your nightmares are simply too big to handle on your own. If you have a recurring nightmare or are having traumatic nightmares, it’s your mind’s warning sign to go talk with a professional. Help is here! I have dedicated my life to helping people like you with these struggles. Nothing brings me more joy than listening to someone’s nightmare and helping them find the peace which is just out of reach. You are not a burden, you are the reason that people like me are excited to help!
3. Move towards the Nightmare
The BIGGEST mistake you can make is to try and ignore your nightmares. This only makes them worse! The next night, your mind will give you an even more intense nightmare to try and get your attention. Instead, by writing them down, reflecting on them and interpreting them, you are showing your mind that you are listening and so the next night, your dreams won’t be so intense.
4. Literal and Figurative Meaning
The simple interpretations you see on TikTok and YouTube are WRONG. Dreams operate on many levels and the most important one to understand is that dreams will mix literal and figurative meaning together. So when you see your witty and charming crush in your dream, this is a literal sign that you find them attractive, but also a figurative sign that you need to work on your own wit and charm so you can grow as a person.
With the same logic, you can also learn to recognize physical dreams that are not a sign of emotional distress, but of something physically going wrong with your body. For example, falling dreams can be a sign of low-blood sugar, earthquakes can be a sign of seizures in your sleep and dreams of drowning can be a sign of sleep apnea. Talk with your doctor! Your body is trying to warn you of what’s going on.
I hope you feel encouraged this week! Please know that you are not alone, you are not a burden, and I am honored to be on this journey with you. Keep writing your dreams down and listening to the messages of your mind! Hit that reply button to let me know how it’s going, I’d love to hear from you <3
