Have you ever had that dream where you’re trying to run away from something terrifying, but your legs feel like they’ve been replaced by two giant, overcooked noodles? Or maybe you’re trying to scream for help, but your throat feels like it’s filled with wet cement?

 |
First off, I am so sorry if that was your Tuesday night. Dream-Jesse has definitely been there. Usually, I’m trying to save a puppy from a runaway taco truck, but I’m moving in slow motion while everyone watches. It’s embarrassing, it’s exhausting, and it leaves you waking up feeling like you did a full CrossFit circuit in your sleep.
But here is the thing. Your subconscious isn’t just being a jerk. It is actually trying to show you something vital about your healing journey.

When we talk about trauma, we usually focus on Fight or Flight. We imagine ourselves being warriors or sprinters. But for many of us, especially those of us who have dealt with long term stress or past hurts, our bodies chose a different path:
The Freeze Response.

In the world of psychology, we know that trauma isn’t just a memory in your head. It is a physical “stuckness” in your nervous system. When you dream of being paralyzed, your subconscious is often reflecting a moment in your waking life where you feel like you have no agency.
The Insight: Being unable to move in a dream often mirrors a “polyvagal” response where your body feels that the only way to stay safe is to shut down.

If you are having these dreams, it is likely because your brain is processing a situation where you feel trapped. Maybe it’s a job, a relationship, or even just the heavy weight of your own past.
|
 |
Here is the encouragement I want you to tuck into your heart today: The dream isn’t a cage. It’s a map. Your mind is showing you exactly where you feel powerless so that you can start reclaiming your strength. You aren’t weak for “freezing.” You are a survivor whose body found a way to endure. Now, we just have to teach your nervous system that it is finally safe to move again.

A Little Tease For Next Week

We’ve talked about the “dream” version of this today. But I know some of you are thinking, Jesse, what about when I’m actually awake and can’t move my body? Next week, we are diving into the spooky, confusing, and often misunderstood world of Sleep Paralysis. We will talk about the “Shadow People” and why your brain decides to throw a horror movie production in your bedroom at 3:00 AM. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.
